Community

I dedicate myself to improving my approach to supporting and representing the diverse groups at Strathclyde.

Event Diversity

Diversify events to accommodate sensory requirements, enhance mindfulness, and host more mid-day events and cultural celebrations.

Union-held events should offer something for everyone.

I have already been working on providing more variety of events for students. I have experimented with the idea of an introverts-friendly social, the 'Introvert's Peaceful Zone', aiming to provide a quieter space on campus. I will continue to design events that accommodate different preferences of noise levels to meet students' various sensory requirements.

I have also promoted and/or supported events our cultural societies held (e.g. SISA, SUMSA and more). In January, I hosted the Lunar New Year's Celebration. We had students from China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Scotland, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United States, and Vietnam (alphabetical order) joining.

I will also love to test out events that increase mindfulness and well-being, such as yoga, meditation, and aromatherapy.

If re-elected, I will start working on more inclusive programmes of events in May, in time for Freshers' week, which offers more daytime activities and encourages societies to hold socials during mid-day to include commuting students. I will also start listing a calendar of cultural celebrations with our cultural societies and meet with the committee regularly to offer my support in planning.

Support Off-campus Students

Lobby support for placement students and study abroad students (especially those with protected characteristics).

It has been brought to my attention that many marginalised students often feel isolated or unsafe when going on placement. I will work with departments that offer industrial placement, such as Psychology, Teaching, Chemistry or Engineering, to explore support that will work for different groups of students.

I have been developing resource packages for LGBT+ students and international students. If re-elected, I will extend the work to develop a one-stop webpage for students to access policies when reclaiming their rights, as well as support resources and report systems.
